PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The news that his case of drinking and driving will not proceed in court has come as a 'wake-up call' for Bitou Ward 4 Councillor Claude Terblanche.
Terblanche, of the Plett Democratic Congress, whose ward covers New Horizons and Ebenezer, appeared in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court on Monday 2 March where the matter against him was withdrawn.
He told the Knysna Plett Herald: "I am relieved that the case has been withdrawn against me, as I can now put my focus on the future of my work and life."
Terblanche said there was insufficient evidence. "The blood results came back and it was below the norm."
He was arrested by provincial traffic officials at a routine roadblock on 4 September last year.
He said he had been waiting for an official to contact him to participate in the What's New pro-gramme aimed at people arrested for driving under the influence (DUI).
Message
Terblanche had a mes-sage for the youth. "I would like to encourage young people to refrain from drinking and driving as it can affect your future when found guilty, [resulting] in a criminal record against your name.
"For me this is a wake-up call being a first-time offender. Our respon-sibility is at all times to behave in a respectful manner and uphold the law. I am still focused on my job and will continue to do it to the best of my ability for as long as I can," he said.
