PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The repair work on High Street, one of Plettenberg Bay's busiest roads leading to several grocery stores and businesses, is at a standstill after a labour dispute between the appointed contractor and its workers brought the construction to a halt.
The suspension of the project, which is regarded as one of the municipality's key road infrastructure upgrades, has raised concerns among residents, motorists and business owners who are affected by the impact on traffic flow and access to businesses.
In a public notice issued on 10 July, Bitou Municipality confirmed that there has still been no resolution to the labour dispute and that work on the High Street upgrade project remains suspended until the matter is resolved.
The municipality said it is administering the contract in accordance with the general conditions of contract (GCC) and that the applicable contractual penalties for delays will be enforced against the contractor where required.
"The municipality apologises for the inconvenience and thanks residents, businesses and motorists for their continued patience and understanding," the statement read.
The municipality has indicated that it will provide further updates as developments become available.
