KNYSNA NEWS & VIDEO - A sub-adult southern elephant seal called Columbo came ashore recently in the Knysna Estuary, Garden Route National Park.
Regrettably he was found partially covered in an oily substance, resulting in an immediate intervention to rid him of this annoyance.
This was done by steadily spraying Columbus with a biodegradable soap solution, allowing it to soak, and then rinsing him afterwards.
We appeal for everyone's support to allow our expert team the space to support Columbus' process to recovery by not visiting and possibly crowding the area. We will though ensure that regular updates are provided on developments whilst Columbus is still visiting.
Remember, wild animals are easily irritated and also frightened due to noise, smoking, dogs, and close encounters with people.

This operation is being conducted as part of the work of South African National Parks (SANParks), South African Stranding Network, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and CapeNature, in consultation with the necessary experts, including vets and oiled wildlife specialists.
