KNYSNA NEWS - More than 350 music enthusiasts gathered under the King Edward Big Tree last Sunday for the fourth edition of the Serenade, hosted under the guidance of chairperson Sabine Schukai and supported by SANParks Honorary Rangers.
The annual event combines classical music with the natural beauty of the Garden Route, offering an unusual and immersive concert experience.
Guests were transported to the venue via shuttle taxis and welcomed with snack boxes featuring locally made wraps and brownies.
The afternoon featured performances by a line-up of acclaimed artists: tenor Pierre van der Westhuizen, saxophonist Jaco Kriek, violinist Elina Koycheva, soprano Louise Howlett, and pianist Albert Combrink.
Many pieces combined piano and violin accompaniment, creating a full and engaging musical programme.
In addition to the music, the performers provided context and storytelling for each piece, deepening the audience's appreciation of the repertoire.
The natural setting, punctuated by birdsong and the rustle of leaves, added a unique atmosphere to the performances, contrasting sharply with traditional concert halls.
The event concluded with a spirited finale as all five artists performed.
"Listen to the Music", encouraging guests to dance along the forest path. Shuttle taxis then safely returned attendees to the guarded parking lot at Loerie Park Stadium.
Proceeds from the Serenade will support nature conservation projects in the Garden Route National Park, highlighting the dual purpose of the event: cultural enrichment and community support.
Organisers said the event also promotes awareness of the important work undertaken by SANParks Honorary Rangers in Knysna.
Schukai and the Honorary Rangers expressed their gratitude to both attendees and artists and encouraged the community to look forward to next year's Valentine's Day concert, which promises to deliver another unique blend of music and nature.
