KNYSNA NEWS - Members of the Judah Square community held a peaceful protest demonstration on Human Rights Day, 21 March.
The purpose of the rally was to deliver a memorandum outlining community members' rights and obligations with relation to cannabis legislation to the police station in Knysna.
The Judah Square community's leaders spearheaded the demonstration, which also served as a Human Rights Day observance.
The demonstration was ultimately also an exhibit of the Rastafarian culture and heritage and a celebration of the community's long-standing history in Knysna.
The Rastafarian population of Knysna resides at Judah Square, the centre of the religion's administrative operations and the largest Rasta community in South Africa. Through community fundraising, the 1993-founded settlement has expanded to include a tabernacle, an educational facility and a holistic health centre.

The neighbourhood of Judah Square has organised various campaigns overs the years since 1992, in which they demonstrated for causes such as legalisation of cannabis and safety against police brutality.
One of the founding members of Judah Square, Cliff Milerton, held the Bill of Rights and has served as an elder in the community for 40 years.
The legal cannabis possession limits for individuals have been stated in the Bill of Rights since 2018; this law has a direct impact on the Judah Square neighbourhood.
The community has previously met with Dan Plato to address the issues faced by the community.
"We want to craft out a future for our people," says community leader Brother Maxie about preserving the Rastafarian way of life in the community and advocating for change.
