KNYSNA NEWS - Local author, historian, and much-loved community figure Margaret Parkes was honoured at a special centennial celebration held on Wednesday 23 July at St George's Anglican Church.
Hosted by the Knysna Historical Society and the Friends of the Knysna Libraries, the event paid tribute to Parkes' 100th birthday and her enduring contributions to preserving Knysna's heritage.
Parkes has spent much of her life documenting the stories, people and places that define Knysna.
Her writings have become key resources for local historians and visitors eager to understand the town's past. Monica Law, a member of the Knysna Libraries, expressed their gratitude.
"I stand here with tremendous gratitude. For all the things you have done and are still doing. We are indebted to you.
We are grateful for your guidance, advice, friendship and dedication. Biggest thank you for your helpfulness, knowledge and being a mother figure to Knysna, including your contribution to the Friends of the Knysna Libraries. May you carry on the good work."
The celebration featured a historical presentation tracing Parkes' life and work, along with a display of her published books. Attendees were invited to enjoy tea, cake, and a celebratory toast in her honour.A certificate of appreciation was awarded to Parkes (right) by Wilma Wardale (left), secretary of the Friends of the Knysna Libraries, at the celebration last Wednesday.
