KNYSNA NEWS - The Land of Milk and Honey Animal Sanctuary is a newly established non-profit organisation (NPO) in Rheenendal, just outside of Knysna, and is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and care of abused and neglected animals.
Life-changing decision
The founders of the NPO, Karen and Martin Obray, have always shared a deep love for animals, and have had a lifelong commitment to caring for them.
In 2019, they made a life-changing decision. Leaving behind their "dream home", they relocated from Cape Town to a 4.5-hectare piece of land where they could expand their efforts and offer sanctuary to animals in need.
Today, their sanctuary is home to 20 dogs, six horses, two donkeys, two cows, a goat, a sheep, and three parrots. Among them, an unlikely but heartwarming friendship has formed between a dog and a goat, who are inseparable, a testament to the love and harmony that defines the NPO.
Each of these animals has endured a heartbreaking past - abuse, starvation and neglect.
Due to the limited size of the land, the NPO must be selective in how many animals they rescue, ensuring they can provide each one with a lifetime of care.

Long-term goal
Beyond rescue, Karen and Martin dream of giving back to the community.
Their long-term goal is to educate people in responsible animal care, promote sterilisation programmes for dogs, and provide food for animals in need.
They believe that awareness and compassion can break the cycle of neglect and improve the lives of both animals and people alike.
Funding support
Marketing and administration officer of the NPO, Elzahn van Aswegen, said until now The Land of Milk and Honey has been entirely self-funded, but to secure its future, Karen and Martin are reaching out for support.
Contributions will help ensure that the animals continue to receive the care they deserve, expand rescue efforts, and allow the NPO to further its community outreach.
"If you would like to be part of this journey, your support - big or small - will make a difference. Every contributor will receive updates on the animals and see firsthand how their generosity is shaping a better future.
"Together, we can ensure that love, hope, and kindness continue to thrive in this special sanctuary," said Van Aswegen.
