KNYSNA NEWS - Seventy-seven children from Dam-se-Bos and surrounding areas are set to reap the benefits of the official opening of Isiseko Daycare Centre - a dream that took over a year to realise, made possible through the collaboration of Breadline Africa and several partner organisations, including Knysna Education Trust (KET).
Despite the rainy weather, excitement filled the air on Saturday 25 October as the community gathered to celebrate the centre's grand reopening, marking a hopeful new era for early childhood education.
From uncertainty to renewal
Just a year ago, in October 2024, Isiseko's future was uncertain. The old building had fallen into severe disrepair - it was damp, mouldy, and unsafe, with walls threatening to collapse. Closure seemed inevitable.
However, principal Brenda Somerset, who has led the preschool for 19 years, refused to give up on the children who depend on Isiseko for learning, care, and nutritious daily meals. Her determination became the spark that reignited hope for the centre's survival.
A community comes together
Recognising the preschool's vital role, KET stepped in to support. With dedicated teachers and a strong early learning foundation already in place, KET launched a fundraising campaign to save the centre.
"The response was heartwarming - generous donations from community members and a major contribution from the Thesen Island Home Owners Association raised R400 000 toward rebuilding efforts," said Ciara Mayne, KET head of media and publishing.
Breadline Africa turns dreams into reality
The project reached new heights when Breadline Africa partnered with KET, increasing the total funds raised to over R1m. Breadline Africa managed the complete rebuild, transforming Somerset's vision into a safe, modern, and welcoming learning space.
Celebration
"Saturday's reopening ceremony was a joyful celebration of resilience and teamwork," added Mayne. Knysna Mayor Thando Matika reflected on his personal connection to the school, while Captain Ferdinand Eyssen of the Knysna Police Station highlighted the importance of nurturing environments for young children.
