PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Ek, Miena (I, Miena), a production by the Plettenberg Bay Secondary School, has wowed audiences in Cape Town, taking second place in the Baxter Theatre's Zabalaza festival.
The feat by now means that the production will feature on the Suidoosterfees stage on 1 May.
Out of 66 productions, 14 groups advanced to the final round on 24 January. Part of Ek Miena's prize was to perform at the Baxter's Zabalaza festival on 14 March, where it was runner-up in the 15th iteration of this competition, presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
The production was written by Plett Secondary School teacher Nadeem Jeftha and will also be performed in Knysna later this year.
Ek, Miena tells the story of a woman, the daughter of a prominent pastor, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Trauma that she experienced during her youth, never recovering from the results of a teenage abortion, is one of the factors that contributed to her condition.
Intense
The production offers a small glimpse into the distorted way in which she tries to piece together the fragments of her life to make sense of it. It also touches on the impact that her condition or diagnosis has on the community and the people around her.
"It is very intense and somewhat explicit at times," says Jeftha.
Directed by Marveen Charles, choreographed by Gashmee Dirk with technical support by Jason Swartz, the cast is: Miena - Sharmell Terblanche; Daantjie - Godwin Le Fleur; Brendon and the doctor - Aidon Boli; Nurse and mother of the stolen baby - Wané Kriel.
