KNYSNA NEWS - A man who might not have been able to swim drowned on Wednesday, despite all efforts to rescue and save him.
At 14:56, Wednesday 17 January, the NSRI Knysna duty crew were activated following reports from the police ) of a drowning in progress at The Point, Knysna lagoon, said NSRI Knysna station commander Jerome Simonis.
“NSRI Knysna rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene and the police, EMS, a police dive unit, CPF and Knysna fire and rescue services responded.
“It appears that the man, in the company of family, had jumped into the water and was reportedly unable to swim.
"It is suspected that he may have believed the water depth to be shallow,” said Simonis.
“On arrival, the rescue swimmers did a free dive search for the 24-year-old man whose family, who were on the scene, reported him to be under the water.
“Our rescue swimmers located the body of the man and a police diver was deployed into the water to assist NSRI in the recovery of the body.
"Sadly, paramedics declared the man deceased,” said the Simonis.
The police have opened an inquest docket, and the man’s body has been taken into the care of the forensic pathology services.
The family are being assisted by trauma counsellors.
