KNYSNA NEWS - In a tribute to one of Knysna's most beloved cultural custodians, the Activities Room at the Knysna Public Library was officially renamed the "Margaret Parkes Room" during a special ceremony held on Friday 15 August.
The event was made even more memorable as Parkes herself cut the ceremonial ribbon, inaugurating the newly named space in recognition of her lifelong dedication to preserving Knysna's rich historical and cultural heritage.
She has recently celebrated her 100th birthday.
The renaming, proposed by the Friends of the Knysna Libraries and supported by the Knysna Public Library, recognises Parkes' decades-long contribution.
A pillar of local historical research and a tireless advocate for public libraries, Parkes has dedicated her life to documenting Knysna's rich past and making it accessible to all.
Parkes' legacy includes key roles in curating the Millwood Museum, developing the library's Special Local History and Africana collections, and transforming local libraries into safe, vibrant learning spaces for after-school study, reading, and digital literacy.
"Parkes' vision was like a great, spreading tree," said Monika Lor, chairperson of Friends of the Libraries. "Her work created a canopy under which knowledge and community could flourish."
As chairperson of the Friends of the Knysna Libraries for most of 24 years, Parkes helped raise over R230 000 for local libraries, all while mentoring volunteers, restoring artefacts, and purchasing rare books.
Lor said that Parkes' meticulous research, public talks, and willingness to share knowledge made her a central figure in Knysna's cultural life.
Parkes, who has received honours such as the Molteno Medal and a Simon van der Stel Foundation Award, remains committed to her work. The naming of the Margaret Parkes Room stands as a fitting tribute to a woman whose vision and dedication continue to inspire.
