KNYSNA NEWS - Learners from Knysna recently visited Rhodes University in Makhanda during an open day to discover the possibilities that await them in higher education.
The open day provided a platform for aspiring students to engage with academics, learn about various courses, and experience campus life first-hand.
The 56 Grade 11 and 12 learners and teachers are members of a tertiary launch programme run by KILT (the Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching).
KILT public relations lead Suzi Cinderey said the programme is designed to support and develop talented learners in Knysna's non fee-paying government high schools, who show university potential.
"Groups of learners from three different high schools, Knysna Secondary School, Percy Mdala and Concordia High School congregated under the watchful eyes of the teachers and made the epic trek, in order to arrive on Rhodes campus in time for a 10 o'clock start," she said.
The university had sponsored transport and breakfast packs for the road, so that the learners could dive straight into their day of discovery.
In Makhanda, the learners seized the opportunity to explore everything that Rhodes has to offer in the faculties of commerce, education, humanities, law, pharmacy and science.
"For the learners, the trip was a great eye-opener, giving them a thrilling hands-on experience of what life might look like if they were accepted into a degree at this respected seat of learning.
"The trip was an inspiration to carry them through the tough exams that lie ahead."
KILT celebrates the efforts of Nonqaba Cekeshe, the programme lead who co-ordinated the initiative and made it all happen, as well as the committed educators chaperoning the outing, Nkululeko Ncence of Concordia High School, Fezile and Siphamandla Madikizela, of Percy Mdala High and Shahill Kemoetie of Knysna Secondary School.
"A huge thank you to Lee- Anne Fazenburg, Manager of Rhodes University Student Recruitment, and her assistant, Zanele Zokufa, for their part in this incredible event."
