KNYSNA NEWS - The Land of Milk and Honey is mourning the passing of two of its animals, a dog and a horse.
The animal sanctuary says these two deaths have left a deep and lingering impact.
The marketing director, Tala Obray, said it has been more than a month since they had lost these two animals, but they haven't been able to accept it yet. "We experienced one of the most difficult chapters, the loss of two extraordinary animals, Kaia the dog and Achilles the horse. Though some time has passed, the weight of their absence is still felt in every corner of the sanctuary."
Kaia, a small but spirited dog and one of the sanctuary's longest residents, passed away first. At 12 years old, she had become a fixture of daily life; not only for the animals, but especially for Karen Obray, co-founder of the sanctuary.
Shortly after, the sanctuary was struck with heartbreak again when Achilles, a majestic black horse known for his strength and serenity, died after being bitten on the head by a puff adder. Achilles had overcome much in his life, having been rescued as a foal after a traumatic injury had left him with a deformed eye.
Achilles
"It's been one of the most painful times we've had to face. Both Kaia and Achilles were family. They had been with us for years. They knew our rhythms, our hearts, and we knew theirs. Their passing has left a deep and lasting void."
The sanctuary is asking for community support so that their legacy can live on through the lives of the other animals waiting for a second chance. It is currently running a raffle to win a two-night stay at Blackwaters Lodge in Knysna. The closing date for entries has been extended to the end of July, giving everyone more time to enter and stand a chance to win. All proceeds go directly to the care of the animals.
