KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna’s safety and emergency teams are officially on high alert for the festive season, following a readiness inspection conducted earlier today by Mayor Thando Matika, Speaker Mark Willemse, and Community Services Director Johnny Douglas.
The leadership trio assessed firefighters, traffic officials and law enforcement officers to ensure the town is fully prepared for the annual surge of holiday visitors.
The municipality has activated its Integrated Seasonal Readiness Plan, which will run until 31 January.
The plan strengthens the town’s capacity to manage increased service demands, maintain public order, and keep Knysna clean and welcoming as thousands of residents and tourists flock to its beaches, parks and attractions.
Municipal officials said all operational units are adequately staffed, equipped and ready for 24-hour deployment throughout the season.
Traffic management and visitor support
To ease congestion and ensure smooth mobility across town, eight traffic officers, 20 casual point-duty officers and 10 tourism monitors will be stationed daily at high-traffic zones and strategic intersections.
Their presence is intended to reduce delays, manage peak-hour pressure points and improve safety for pedestrians and motorists.
Visible law enforcement presence
A contingent of 30 temporary Law Enforcement officers has been added to bolster routine operations.
These officers will patrol public spaces, enforce municipal by-laws, monitor road safety, and respond to complaints ranging from noise disturbances to general public nuisances. The municipality emphasised that its zero-tolerance approach to lawbreaking remains firmly in place.
Fire-readiness and water safety
With warmer weather and increased outdoor activity heightening fire risks, Knysna Fire Services confirmed that its full fleet has been serviced and is operational. Fire crews will remain on high alert throughout the season, prepared to respond rapidly to any incidents.
Lifeguards have also been deployed to all beaches and municipal swimming pools. Their responsibilities include monitoring strong currents, assisting swimmers and ensuring that both locals and visitors enjoy safe recreational time.
Community co-operation urged
Matika urged residents and visitors to support the efforts of the safety teams by complying with instructions, reporting concerns promptly, and maintaining respect for shared spaces.
He emphasised that collaboration between the public and authorities is essential in ensuring a peaceful, enjoyable festive period.
Municipal officials also reminded the public to celebrate responsibly - keep noise levels reasonable, remain considerate of neighbours, and remember that fireworks are strictly prohibited throughout the municipal area.
As the holiday season kicks off, Knysna’s leadership expressed confidence that the combined readiness of its emergency, law enforcement, and traffic teams will help deliver a safe and enjoyable summer for all who visit and call the town home.
