KNYSNA NEWS - South African Library Week will be celebrated from 16 to 20 March this year, with the Knysna Public Library joining libraries across the country in marking the occasion.
One of the highlights will be a talk by local author Barbara Townsend, who will speak about her passion for uncovering lesser-known stories and share insights into her journey as a self-published author.
The talk will take place at the library in Memorial Square, Knysna, on Wednesday 18 March from 10:00 to 11:00.
Afterwards, tea and coffee will be served and books will be available for sale in the courtyard.
This year, the theme for the week is 'Reclaiming Knowledge, Empowering Futures'.
The theme highlights the important role libraries play in preserving, protecting and reclaiming knowledge as a public good. It also encourages reflection on how libraries safeguard the nation's intellectual heritage while creating opportunities for inclusive learning and innovation.
Libraries, partners, government institutions, educators and commu-nities across the country are invited to take part in activities during South African Library Week to celebrate the power of knowledge and reaffirm the enduring value of libraries in empowering communities.
The Knysna Library will host several activities during the week.
The Friends of the Library invite residents to join them in celebrating this special week.
South African Library Week was initiated in 2001 by the Library and Information Association of South Africa.
The week serves as a national commemorative period during which libraries promote their services and raise awareness about the vital role libraries play in a democratic society. It also aims to advance literacy, promote freedom of access to information, and encourage tolerance and respect among all South Africans.
