KNYSNA NEWS - As the official coronation portrait of King Charles III, by the British artist Peter Kuhfeld, was unveiled in London in May, a completely different painting by the very same artist is coincidentally being shown at the Knysna Fine Art Gallery.
Kuhfeld's painting, titled Sun in the acers: woman with parasol, an oil on canvas, was completed about 10 years ago and has come into Knysna Fine Art for sale as a private consignment.
After the unveiling of the royal portrait, the painting at the Knysna Fine Art Gallery is garnering much attention.
Kuhfeld was born in Cheltenham in 1952 and is an English figurative painter. He is married to the English figurative painter Cathryn Kuhfeld.
Coronation portrait
The coronation portrait of King Charles was unveiled in May at the National Gallery in London and will be on display in the throne room at Buckingham Palace from July.
Coronation portraits have for centuries been part a traditional part of the crowning of a monarch. In 1986, King Charles commissioned Kuhfeld to paint his sons William and Harry.
It is no secret that Kuhfeld has been a favoured artist of King Charles III since 1990, when he first accompanied the then Prince of Wales as tour artist on a visit to Nigeria, Cameroon and Tunisia.
Since then, Kuhfeld has joined the king on five more overseas tours. Kuhfeld also photographed the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011.
While Kuhfeld was especially chosen by the king for his coronation painting, Queen Camilla chose to be painted by a different British artist, Paul Benney.
"While taking care to incorporate the symbols of monarchy in a manner appropriate for an official coronation portrait, in this painting Kuhfeld also sought to capture the king's personality and character that he has come to know over the course of his career," says the Royal Collection Trust.
