KNYSNA NEWS- The Epilepsy South Africa South Cape/Karoo branch hosted its annual candle-lighting ceremony at the Knysna Mall last Wednesday as part of National Epilepsy Week.
Held during the national awareness campaign (9 to 15 February), the event aligned with International Epilepsy Day, bringing community members together for a reflective evening of solidarity and hope.
The ceremony holds special significance for the branch, honouring residents from the residential facility and adult day care who passed away over the past year, individuals living with epilepsy, dedicated staff and volunteers who provide daily care, and caregivers and family members who support people with disabilities in the community.
As part of a global initiative supported by the International Bureau for Epilepsy, the candle-lighting serves as an international symbol to raise awareness, combat stigma, and demonstrate unity with those affected by epilepsy locally and worldwide.
The programme featured gentle music by a church worship team, dance performances by local school groups and the communal lighting of candles.
Ashleigh Smith, fundraiser and public relations officer, described the event as calm, inclusive, and deeply moving. The free public gathering welcomed attendees to join in reflection and solidarity.
The Epilepsy South Africa South Cape/Karoo branch continues its work throughout the year to support people affected by epilepsy, promoting understanding, inclusion, and access to care. For more information or to get involved, the public can contact the branch directly.
