KNYSNA NEWS - As if the quagmire of snide to and fros have not been enough to contend with, deciphering the glaring ironies have also posed a challenge in Knysna's political realm.
- Councillor Michelle Wasserman's apparent hunt for mayor Mark Willemse hinges on among others that he did not adhere to the DA's federal constitution when he voted with the ANC in the motion of no confidence against former mayor Eleanore Bouw-Spies. Yet the motion of no confidence in Willemse – led by Wasserman – seems to go against the same constitution. In terms of the DA caucus rules and the DA federal constitution, a motion of no confidence cannot be submitted without first being the subject of a caucus decision and then such decision being ratified by the federal executive. Neither of these requirements has been met.
- Wasserman also implies that Willemse was not elected through the necessary procedures, yet according to the Knysna Ratepayers Association, Wasserman was not elected to council but was brought in to replace Willemse about a year ago if the DA could force him out as mayor. According to councillor Peter Myers, Wasserman has not been elected to any ward and neither was she on the party lists for the DA in 2016. "Having her on council therefore reflects a democratic deficit problem – no one in Knysna has actually had the chance to vote for her," Myers said.
- Wasserman alleges that Willemse does not have the support from among others, the public, yet a petition – which has been signed by just shy of 1 000 locals – in his support is making the rounds. A march is also being planned in his support for today.
- Among the councillors supporting the motion of no confidence is Knysna Speaker Georlene Womarans, who is ironically also facing a motion of no confidence, filed by the ANC, today.
- It also seems to be a glaring irony that Willemse, a staunch DA supporter who recently canvassed for his party during the national and provincial elections, is being hounded by his own party to step down.
