KNYSNA NEWS - Vodacom has offered Knysna a high-tech water monitoring solution to help prevent Day Zero, free for the first year.
The offer to monitor the water situation in the town and optimise water management was made during a presentation by Vodacom executives at a special council meeting on Friday 6 February.
The Vodacom Digital Water Tower Solution was introduced by Waldi Wepener, managing executive of Vodacom western region.
The solution is currently being used to manage water challenges in Gauteng and Tshwane.
The water tower is an intelligent IoT (Internet of Things) platform that integrates data from reservoirs, pipelines and consumers to provide real-time visibility, detect leaks, and optimise water management.
The IoT is a network of physical objects ("things") embedded with sensors, software and technologies that enable them to collect, exchange, and act on data via the internet or networks.
The tower aims to reduce non-revenue water losses by using sensors to monitor pressure, flow and quality.
Key aspects of the technology:
- IoT integration: Connects infrastructure with sensors, meters and attenuators for continuous monitoring.
- Data analytics: Provides a unified, digital view of water networks to help municipalities detect leaks and manage demand.
- Operational efficiency: Enables predictive mainte-nance and optimised supply to reduce water wastage.
This platform is part of Vodacom's shift to a "techno" model, using data to improve utility services.
A motion was tabled by Knysna Independent Movement Councillor Susan Campbell to note the offer and delegate the municipal manager to conclude a memorandum of understanding between the municipality and Vodacom.
