PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The Bitou Municipality has officially lifted the current water restrictions with immediate effect following a significant improvement in local water resources driven by the recent rainfall.
This decision brings relief to the residents after months of conservation measures aimed at stabilising supply during a prolonged dry period.
According to the municipality, the improved water levels have eased immediate pressure on the system, allowing for the suspension of restrictions that had been in place to manage limited supply.
Dam levels show strong recovery
As of the latest monitoring, key water sources have shown substantial improvement. The Keurbooms system is currently recorded at 96 426L/s, while the Roodefontein Dam stands at 102.93%, an overflow capacity level following the sustained rainfall in the catchment areas.
Municipal officials described the figures as a positive development, indicating a strong seasonal recovery in regional water availability.
Pump station flooded and access delayed
Despite the encouraging dam levels, the municipality cautioned that operational challenges remain.
The main water supply for the area is pumped from the Uplands Pump Station, which was only accessible on Tuesday morning, 12 May, due to the severe weather conditions and road closures.
Upon inspection, the site was found to be flooded, resulting in delays to essential maintenance work. The officials confirmed that this has temporarily affected operational stability and ongoing monitoring efforts at the facility.
Continued water-saving urged
Residents have been urged to remain cautious and continue using water sparingly, despite the lifting of restrictions. The municipality emphasised that responsible consumption remains essential to ensure long-term sustainability, particularly while repairs and assessments at the pump station are under way.
The municipality extended its appreciation to the community for their co-operation during the restriction period, noting that collective efforts played a key role in conserving water resources during a critical phase.
Further updates will be provided as assessments continue and conditions at the Uplands Pump Station are stabilised.
