Update
PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Bitou Municipality has launched an official investigation into the fire that destroyed 84 to 90 households in Qolweni yesterday, 17 October.
A total of 183 people were impacted, including 69 children, many of whom are currently writing or preparing for their final school exams.
Concern
The municipality expressed its “deep concern” about the frequency and impact of fires in the area – yesterday’s fire was the fourth in six months in Qolweni.
A statement released by the municipality called for “unity and prevention”, saying the fire incidents are traumatic, disruptive, and costly.
“We urge all residents to work hand in hand with us to prevent future tragedies. Together, we can build a safer, more resilient community."
Investigation
The municipality said while the cause of the fire is unknown, "an official investigation is currently in progress”.
Rebuilding has now started and affected residents are clearing the area in preparation to rebuild their homes.
Humanitarian efforts
The statement said the municipality was working “urgently” to prepare and distribute emergency building materials to help families begin reconstruction. “Humanitarian aid is being provided, and we extend heartfelt gratitude to all individuals and organisations who continue to lend a helping hand during such difficult times.”
Power outage and Infrastructure damage
The fire also damaged electrical infrastructure, and the affected area has been without power since yesterday afternoon. Restoration efforts are underway.
