KNYSNA NEWS - An exhibition of paintings by South African artist Greg Schultz will open at Knysna Fine Art on Saturday 21 September and run for approximately a month.
The works to go on show include paintings of sites along the coastline from Tsitsikamma to Wilderness.
Schultz draws his inspiration from the estuarine environment, including from the surroundings of his home on the banks of the Kwelera River near East London.
This is reflected in his recent exhibitions, including Panacea, Shift, Traverse, Crossing, Second Crossing, Flux, Antidote, Solace and Essence (2020) at Knysna Fine Art.
His focus is on painting and drawing, but he also explores sculpture and animated film. He has held 20 solo exhibitions, and taken part in over 50 group ones, locally and abroad.
Private collections
His work features in numerous corporate collections, including at Absa Bank, in private collections in, among others, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the US, Canada, England, Ireland, Russia, Australia and New Zealand, and at art galleries, including the SA National Gallery, William Humphreys Art Gallery, and the Ann Bryant Art Gallery.'Drupkelders Blues' - oil on canvas.
Schultz says of his forthcoming exhibition at Knysna Fine Art: "I have been privileged to experience, engage, and explore our indescribably beautiful forests, estuaries, and oceans.
"These spaces include new 'territory' to the south, from the Tsitsikamma to the Wilderness. The paintings are site-specific and the actual place is recognisable.
'Flying insects'
"These paintings are expressions of my love of water and the land. Growing up on the coast, immersed in the ocean and rivers, and later living on the Kwelera River, surrounded by untamed nature, has made me aware of nature's elemental vitality, so indivisible from our physical and spiritual existence.
"'Compositional devices', which I call 'question marks' are experimental and are utilised in red geometric shapes or lines. Other paintings include flying insects, birds, or GPS coordinates to denote the specific place.
"It is here, within these spaces, that I seek to capture the essence of 'spirit of place'; this evolves and changes as the painting process unfolds."
Hours of the gallery, at Thesen House, 6 Long Street, Knysna: Monday to Friday: 09:00-17:00; Saturdays: 09:00-13:00.
