KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Secondary School recently bid farewell to Basil Manuel, a long-serving educator and deputy principal, who retired at the end of January after an extraordinary 40 years of service to the school and the wider Knysna community.
Manuel's career at Knysna Secondary was marked by dedication, professionalism, and commitment to learner development.
Over four decades, he served in various capacities, ultimately assuming the role of deputy principal. Through his calm leadership, integrity and sound judgement, Manuel has earned the respect of colleagues, learners and parents alike.
"It was never about me," he said. "It was 40 years of giving of myself and what I received, to the community. I was a teacher, and I am proud of being one."
Inspiring academic excellence
As a specialist life sciences educator, Manuel consistently motivated learners to excel academically.
His expertise and passion were evident in numerous milestones, including a remarkable 100% pass rate in the 2025 National Senior Certificate examinations.
"Every child can achieve success," he commented. "Many come from homes where they may have no motivation to be better. You, the teacher, can change that attitude and show a child the way to success."
Mentorship beyond the classroom
Manuel's influence extended far beyond academics. A committed rugby coach, he nurtured generations of young athletes, instilling values such as teamwork, discipline, resilience and respect.
His coaching achievements included guiding SWD teams to national victories and mentoring former learners, such as Springbok Davon Raubenheimer, who rose to professional levels.
"If Basil Manuel could rise from the streets of Hornlee and become a teacher, a coach, somebody others hopefully can look up to, they [other children] can do it too," he said.
Proudest moments and lasting impact
Despite his many accomplishments, Manuel described his proudest moments as witnessing the success of his learners.
"The learners who achieved good marks and went on to study for a career, as well as those working in other areas where they can serve people, make me most proud.
When I step into a shop or on the street, there are always former learners who make me extremely proud to have added a small piece to their successes."
Looking forward to retirement
As he transitions into retirement, Manuel remains humble and reflective. "I have been busy for 40 years… Now I must first become used to being retired. Wherever the Lord takes me, I will follow and try to do my best."
Knysna Secondary School extends heartfelt gratitude to Manuel for his lifelong dedication. While his presence will be greatly missed, his legacy will continue to inspire and guide the school community for generations to come.
