RHEENENDAL NEWS - A tense encounter involving an allegedly drug-intoxicated man armed with a large panga has once again highlighted growing safety concerns linked to the controversial "tik house" on South African National Parks (SANParks) land near Bibbieshoek. This comes in the wake of two reports in last week's Knysna-Plett Herald on the worrying situation in Bibbieshoek. The incident unfolded at around 20:50 on Monday 9 March, when a Bibbieshoek resident received urgent information that an adult male - allegedly heavily under the influence of drugs and carrying a large panga - had been seen on the stoep of a nearby property.
The resident, acting to prevent the situation from escalating, picked up another community member and alerted the police while heading to the scene.
Once there, the resident ensured the suspect could not leave and guided responding officers to the property.
Around 21:25, he encountered two other suspicious-looking men walking towards a house that locals have repeatedly described as a drug hub. Minutes later, police stopped the two men, allegedly finding dangerous weapons in their possession, and arrested both individuals.
All three men detained that evening reportedly have links to the controversial house, which has been the subject of repeated complaints from Bibbieshoek residents for more than a year.
The incident has intensified concerns among locals, who say crime and intimidation linked to the property are escalating.
"One of the residents could have been seriously assaulted," said a Bibbieshoek community member who requested anonymity for fear of victimisation. "This is not the first time something like this has happened. Is it going to take someone being killed before SANParks or the authorities step in?"
The community member, who has lived in Bibbieshoek for nearly three decades, said the events are deeply troubling in a suburb long known for its quiet rural character.
"For almost 30 years this has been a peaceful place to live," he said. "Now things suddenly seem to be falling apart. If nothing is done, residents fear Bibbieshoek could slowly turn into a drug nest."
Residents have repeatedly raised the issue with SANParks officials and are awaiting clarity on possible legal steps to address the alleged illegal occupation of the property.
