KNYSNA NEWS - Dane Grant, a senior firefighter from Ellerslie Fire Station in Auckland, New Zealand, recently visited the Knysna Fire Department during a family holiday.
The highlight of his visit was the traditional station badge swap; a small gesture carrying deep meaning within the fire service. "Swapping badges is a long-standing fire service tradition. It's simple, but it symbolises shared experience and mutual respect," said Grant.
For firefighters across the globe, these tokens represent a borderless brotherhood and sisterhood built on trust, teamwork and a shared commitment to answer the call when communities need them most.
Grant was welcomed by senior firefighter Brendon Cunningham and Platoon 2 under the leadership of Fire Chief Ian Bezuidenhout.
After a tour of the station, the ceremonial exchange took place in the training room.
According to Grant, the conversation that followed focused, among others, on local operations and equipment, including the station's 4x4 Mercedes Atego pump rescue truck.
They also chatted about the devastating June 2017 Knysna fires and the more than 1 200 firefighters whose extraordinary efforts brought the blazes under control.
