Update
KNYSNA NEWS - Leon van Rooyen, the man convicted of killing Plettonian Alan Smit on 23 March 2019, was handed a sentence of three years imprisonment in the Knysna Magistrate's Court earlier this week.
Magistrate E Jacob's found Van Rooyen guilty of culpable homicide for the killing of Smit in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Tuesday 22 February.
The case was then postponed to this Monday, 4 April, to allow for the collection of pre-sentencing documents.
Much to the relief of Smit’s family and friends, Van Rooyen was finally sentenced, two years and 12 days after Smit was killed in a road rage incident.
Van Rooyen was sentenced to three years in jail, with an additional three years that are suspended over a period of five years.
"This means that the accused must not be arrested and convicted for the same offence over a period of five years from the day he was sentenced," said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila.
Smit's widow, Ashleigh, expressed her and the family's satisfaction at the sentence. "We are very happy with this outcome, and are so grateful that justice has been served for Alan's death," she said.
