KNYSNA NEWS - The SANParks Honorary Rangers' fifth annual golf day, which took place last Wednesday, raised R250 000, marking another successful instalment of the popular Birdies for Nature Golf tournament.
The event, aimed at supporting conservation, was hosted at Pezula Championship Course in Knysna and drew 116 participants.
The players were welcomed onto the course by a lively band from Sedgefield. With clear skies, sweeping coastal views and a gently cooling breeze, conditions were tailor-made for a brilliant day of golf.
According to Sabine Schukai, chairperson of SANParks in the Knysna region, there were more than 50 sponsors along the fairways entertaining the players with all sorts of activities that included beer tents, shooters, putting challenges and delicious snacks - and even a car display.
"Major sponsors such as Pam Golding, Alkira Lodge and Samara Karoo Game Reserve helped make the event possible. Every contribution, big or small, fed directly into SANParks Honorary Rangers projects," Schukai said.
"Over the past year, funds raised have enabled the diving certification of four rangers, strengthening efforts to protect and monitor the Knysna Estuary.
A new boardwalk has been completed through the Old Airfield, while education centres in both the Diepwalle and Harkerville visitor areas are taking shape.
Maintenance of hiking trail huts and various community-focused initiatives also continue to benefit from the generosity of sponsors and players alike.
As the official fundraising arm of SANParks, the Honorary Rangers rely on events like this to support their extensive conservation work."
The day concluded with lucky draws, a lively auction and a prize-giving ceremony.
