Ten teams competed in a seven-a-side street soccer tournament and seven teams competed in a netball contest. Medals and trophies sponsored by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport were awarded.
The Western Cape minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ivan Meyer said hope should not be created only for a few, it should be created for all. "Taking these varieties of sport and culture to the streets makes them more accessible to everyone, and that contributes to social inclusion," said Meyer.
Provincial Education minister, Donald Grant acknowledged the critical role of education in youth development. "Every child must have a fair opportunity to basic education in this area, which is the cornerstone to a bright future," said Grant.
The festivities celebrated the role played by the youth in leading the events of June 16, 1976, the day of the Soweto uprising. The day is also intended to honour all the young people who lost their lives in the struggle against Apartheid and inferior education.
