Welcome Salaze, chairperson of the Knysna ANC office, handed over the petition. The prorestors demanded answers from council within seven days.
The petition was accepted by Knysna deputy executive mayor Esmé Edge on behalf of the Knysna Council,
Salaze made it clear that they don't want the petition to be handled by the Public Participation Department. "The department is full of empty promises," he said.
In the petition the protestors ask the municipality to relocate all the people who live on SANRAL land on municipal boundaries so that they can have access to municipal services. They demanded that those people should get temporary electricity in the meantime.
Other demands include that all houses built by the Knysna Municipality must have a water tank, that all streets in Ward 8 should at least be paved and have street lights. They also wanted land for churches, a playground for children and a multi-purpose centre.
Edge assured the protestors that she will hand over the petition to the executive mayor, Georlene Wolmarans and the municipal manager, Lauren Waring.
Protestors gathered outside the Knysna municipal offices on Saturday, November 8.
