GEORGE NEWS - Unfortunately the annual Orchid Show at the Presbyterian Church Hall in George will not take place this year due to Covid-19, where arguably the largest orchid in the Garden Route would have been on display.
There is hope, though - it can be seen at the Outeniqua Orchid Nursery in Blanco. According to nursery owner Else Hall, visitors can visit the nursery from 10:00 to 13:00 on Wednesday mornings. Phone 044 870 8150 for directions.
The phenomenal orchid is a Dendrobium, which originates from Australia, mostly New South Wales and Victoria. It is a cool to hot growing lithophyte that blooms in spring.
They like a drier winter rest with little or no fertilizer or water. It can take nearly full sun and needs some protection from the midday sun during the hot summer months.
It is coming into bloom now and has nearly 70 sprays of orchids, each spray with 50 to 75 tiny creamy yellow flowers, smelling of hyacinth. The nursery also provides a repotting service, but for those who like to do it themselves, they stock an excellent orchid bark mix.
