Manser traveled from Durban to Cape Town in a 40-foot container fridge at -20°C to raise money for his charity, No Food For Lazy Man Trust, an initiative to bring about social change by investing in sporting equipment and infrastructure for schools that don't have access to these resources. The trust takes its name from a phrase Manser encountered during his circumnavigation of Africa.
He maintains that his adventurous character and tenacity were developed through sport, and as such he promotes personal growth and achievement by taking sport to where he believes it is needed.
Manser explained that he is doing this because he can. "I decide what I do with my life," said Manser. The refrigerated container has effects on the human body which cannot be anticipated. Manser had a rowing machine and a treadmill in the container as it is much warmer when one keeps moving.
He recounted an earlier interview with SABC during which his Afrikaans vocabulary became almost non-existent. Manser attributed this to the below freezing temperatures. To keep his mind busy, Manser had begun constructing an ice chair, carving at ice-blocks with an axe.
Manser spent eight days in this refrigerated mobile home, stopping in small towns along the way. At night he slept in a partitioned area which was slightly warmer (between 0 and 3°C). He emerged from his icy quarters on Saturday, February 26 in Newlands, Cape Town.
He called the tour Warming Up For Iceland and viewed the experience as training for his next expedition, when he will attempt to kayak around Iceland with his friend, Dan Skinstad, who has a physical disability in the form of mild cerebral palsy. The expedition, due to depart this week, is coined Around Iceland on Inspiration, and will be the first expedition Manser undertakes with a partner, his previous adventures being solo endeavours.
With fascinating stories, photographs and video footage, Manser found himself perfectly positioned to offer fresh and unique motivational talks at a time when the world is clamouring for inspiration. He speaks passionately and humorously about his adventures, inspiring all who attend his presentations.
