KNYSNA NEWS - One of the new additions to the Knysna Oyster Festival roster this year, a special event for art admirers from all over, was the Art Walk About held last week Friday, 8 July. The Art Walk About took participants on a self-guided tour of seven local art venues in the centre of Knysna and on Thesens Island.
A glass of wine in hand, art lovers enjoyed the rare opportunity to explore a little more than a handful of Knysna's artistic gems.

They could start their walking at The Old Gaol at the corner of Main and Queen streets or on Thesens Island, and then take a casual stroll through one of the oldest parts of town, enjoying a series of exhibits by local and national artists. A glass of wine and light snacks were provided at each venue.
The venues taking part in the Art Walk About were The Old Gaol, the Knysna Art Gallery, Art on Queen, Knysna Fine Art, Lynn Schaeffer's personally curated art house, The Gathershop, Jandreart, and Nathalie Wessels with an art display at Pam Golding Properties.
The Jandreart studio also formed part of the walk about initiative.
Art houses and galleries typically operate independently, but under the auspices of the Knysna Arts Society things have changed in recent years and the local arts scene has swiftly turned into an all-inclusive arts community where everyone joined hands to pave a way for art in Knysna. Perhaps the purest and most beautiful exhibition of this arts community is the Circles in the Forest interactive art project, behind Knysna Municipality's financial building and the Knysna Town Hall.
The building is located on the street block that is encompassed by Queen and Clyde streets, and the wall that has turned into a stunning art piece can be seen from the southern side of Queen Street. For this project the Knysna Arts Society allowed artists both local and visiting during the Oyster Festival to paint an allocated circular spot on the wall, hence the name 'Circles in the Forest'.
A stencil of a number of circles was painted, leaving a template of circles of varying sizes for artists to fill with paintings in their own unique style.
The official opening of the new art installation is expected soon.
