PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Police's efforts in Plettenberg Bay as they fight against the illegal drug trade, were recognised during a prestigious award recently.

At the provincial SAPS Excellence Prestige awards in the Western Cape, held annually, the town's officers received an award for the top drug success in the province. The ceremony was held at the Century City Conference Centre on 21 October, to honour those who have gone beyond the call of duty.

Police spokesperson Captain Marlene Pieterse said that members of the town’s shift C were recognised for their work during a massive drug bust in December last year.

“Work done by these members showed their dedication and commitment to their work,” Pieterse said.

The drug bust took place on 26 December 2016 at about 00:30 during a stop-and-search on the N2 at the traffic circle near the Shell Ultra City.

Pieterse said the officers spotted a white Volkswagen Amarok double cab bakkie with a protective cover over the load bin.

“They stopped the vehicle and searched it with the consent of the driver.”

During their search members discovered raw tik under the cover. The drugs were packed in different porridge packaging sealed with brown adhesive tape.

“It weighed 80kg and had an estimated value of R28-million. The drugs and the vehicle were confiscated.

“We are always very proud of our members for their commitment to protecting and serving our community and it is wonderful that their efforts are being recognised.”
