BITOU | KNYSNA NEWS - Garden Route police made massive inroads in getting drugs off the streets in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna on Friday when six suspects were arrested on possession of drugs charges.
They also boosted road safety by dishing out traffic fines worth just short of R30 000.
This formed part of Western Cape police's intensified efforts to rid communities of drugs and liquor, believed to lead to serious and violent crimes.
Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile led a joint high density operation along the Garden Route District from Thursday 1 September until Sunday morning 4 September with specific focus on identified "hotspots and crime generators".
The deployment consisted of members of the Public Order Police, the Rural Flying Squad, Crime Intelligence Gathering, Vehicle Identification and Safeguarding Section, K-9 units, provincial and municipal traffic as well as other local law enforcement agencies.
"These operations included high-density patrols, closing down of illicit drug and liquor outlets, search and seizure operations, roadblocks, vehicle check points and visits to legal liquor outlets," said Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies.
On Friday these forces were deployed in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna and they conducted stop-and-search operations as well as roadblocks along the N2.
They arrested nine undocumented people, issued R29 800 worth of fines for traffic-related offences and arrested six suspects, aged between 25 and 38, on charges of possession of drugs. Police also confiscated small quantities of Mandrax found in their possession.
Police management commended all involved for their efforts.
