PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Some of the country's top authors and history buffs will make their way to Plettenberg Bay soon for the fourth Watercourse History Festival.
Organisers recently announced the programme for the festival, which is set to take place between 26 and 29 April this year at the Piesang Valley Community Hall.
The first presenter will be Hennie van Vuuren, activist, writer and founding director of Open Secrets ZA (a non-profit organisation that exposes and builds accountability for private sector economic crimes through investigative research, advocacy, and the law). He will talk about powerful politicians and corporations who profit from impunity.
He will be followed by Dr June Bam, who is widely published and an internationally known heritage practitioner, with a talk about her book Ausi Told Me: Why Cape Herstoriographies Matter.
Another presentation will be done by Dr Bantu Siwisa, author, researcher and expert in a variety of fields including nation building and politics. He will share knowledge captured in his book Rugby, Resistance and Politics: Dan Qeqe and a people's history of Port Elizabeth.
Another highlight on the programme is a presentation by author Rory Riordan, who will speak on his recently launched book Apartheid's Stalingrad. All four speakers' books are published by top South African political and history publisher Jacana.
Other presenters include the chairman of the SA First People's Museum Foundation, Ron Martin, who will share his knowledge on the history of the Griqua people from Piketberg to Plettenberg Bay.
Investigative journalist De Wet Potgieter will switch things up with a talk on rhino poaching, while historian Dean Allen will speak about his book Empire, War and Cricket: Logan of Matjiesfontein.
Another journalist, John Matisson, will also take the stage to share more on his book Afghanistan: Every Empire Tried its Luck. The festival will end with talks by historian Shalo Mbatha, who will speak about succession in the Zulu kingdom, and presentations by former war correspondent turned novelist Hamilton Wende and journalist Joseph Oesi about the ANC's long-standing relationship with the former Soviet Union.
Tickets are available at Barney's Kiosk at the Market Square Shopping Centre and through Quicket.
