PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Police seized dagga worth more than R25 000 during a roadblock near Plettenberg Bay over the past weekend.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said various crime fighters conducted a roadblock at the Tsitsikamma Toll Plaza on the N2 as part of crime prevention operations.
Officers of the Eden Cluster Flying Squad pulled over a taxi that was on its way from the Eastern Cape to Kwanokuthala in Plett.
"Officers conducted a routine search when they detected a strong cannabis odour inside the cabin," Pojie said.
The vehicle was thoroughly searched and more than 8,5kg of dagga, worth about R25 000, was found. The drugs were concealed in 19 plastic shopping bags, hidden in a large yellow plastic bag.
"Subsequent to the find, members arrested the driver and his operator for dealing in, or alternatively possession of illegal drugs," Pojie said.
The suspects, 42 and 56 years old, are both from Kwanokuthula. They are expected to appear in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court this week.
A total of 323 arrests were made between Friday 4 February and Sunday morning, 6 February. Of these, 267 were for reported crime committed over the three days of the operations, 18 were suspects wanted for serious crime and 19 were the execution of arrest warrants.
"This weekend's operations included high-visibility blue light patrols in crime-stricken areas, roadblocks, stop-and-search operations with a special focus on drug and liquor outlets, illegal firearms, the tracing of wanted suspects and the confiscation of dangerous weapons," said Pojie.
Acting Eden Cluster Commander Brigadier Belinda Pather praised officers for their dedication to safeguarding communities within their area and Western Cape police management commended the officers for their vigilance in bringing these perpetrators to book.
Pojie said combined and integrated operations will continue to safeguard Western Cape against the scourge of drug addiction and serious and violent crimes, including gender-based violence.
