PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS & VIDEO - The Qolweni community in Plettenberg Bay is demanding that the housing project that is at the root of their five-day protest, be handed over to the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements. This was set out in a letter from the community's leaders.
The MEC for the department, Tertuis Simmers, arrived in Plett this morning, Friday 18 June, and is expected to address the community.
The national road has been closed since Monday due to rioting by the residents who are unhappy about the delays in a housing project in the area. Protesters have been barricading the road near the Shell garage with burning tyres and other debris.
Municipal officials have had two meetings with the community since Monday, but both failed to end the rioting.
Motorists have been forced to use an alternative route via the town’s Airport Road.
