KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Oyster Festival Community Awareness Kick-off was hosted on Saturday 1 July at the picturesque Issaquena Heights Boutique Hotel.
Started by the American MD of Issaquena Heights, Otis Rounds, and assisted by locals Elrico April, Thando Best and others, the initiative was set up to bolster the community.
The day was filled with fun educational programmes on drug awareness for youths aged 10 to 17 as well as for their parents.
It was facilitated by Marshal Lamini, CEO of the Knysna Alcohol and Drug Centre (KADC), and provided a forum for parents to gain insight and receive advice.
Activities for children aged 4 to 6 by the Knysna Education Trust, included educational games and a jumping castle.
Ward 10 Councillor Peter Bester said it's vital for the community to take an active role as citizens. "It is important that we go out there and seize opportunities to make a better living, not only for ourselves, but especially for our children," he said.
Rounds is planning a series of outreach programmes. "Since arriving in Knysna, my wife and I have always wanted to engage with the broader community. We're in the process of developing food-, community housing-, and drug awareness programmes for the beautiful communities surrounding us," said Rounds.
The day was rounded off with a lively performance by the Sinathemba Steel Band.
