Fiona Simpson, a nursing sister at Leisure Gardens said of the couple, “They are so devoted to one another. It’s inspirational.”
Peggy was born in Glasgow, Scotland, 90 years ago and emigrated to South African with her parents at the age of 5. As a pretty young lady she was introduced to Les Lloyd by her brother in Brakpan, and it wasn’t long before the knot was tied in the Springs district of Brakpan. They lived there for four to five years, before Les was given a position with the Anglo American Corporation in Welkom, Free State. There they spent 40 years and had two sons born to them.
Peggy recalls that Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, founder of the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa. was quite wonderful and donated ground for schools to be built. Christian Brothers and St Agnes Convent School were built and the Lloyds' two sons attended school there. They married and gave Peggy and Les eight grandchildren, who have so far given the couple eight great grandchildren.
The couple lived a happy married life in Welkom until Les retired from Anglo American and opened an Engineering business in Welkom.
In 1988, the couple moved to a house they purchased on Leisure Island, before eventually moving to Leisure Gardens where they have been resident for the past three years. When asked whether in their 70 years of married life there had ever been cross words between them Peggy paused, and then said with a smile, “Sometimes.”
Peggy and Les Lloyd enjoy the sunny lounge at Leisure Gardens as they contemplate their platinum wedding anniversary (70 years) on January 15. They are still devoted to each other and say they enjoyed a wonderful marriage.
