PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Technology and the diligence of Plettenberg Bay crime fighters last week led to the recovery of several cellphones, suspected to be stolen, being recovered.
Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) operations head Otto Olivier said that the PBCPA team responded when they received a report just before 17:00 on 22 February that someone had been robbed of their cellphone in the vicinity of Hobie Beach.
The suspect immediately fled the scene after the incident.
Olivier said they notified police while several other crime fighters responded immediately.
"A meticulous search was done of the area and the vicinity that the stolen phone's last 'ping' was traced to," Olivier said. Responders stood down at about 18:30 and a case was opened.
The following day, with the help of local police detectives and various other crime fighters, the phone was tracked and traced to a suspect.
He was not only found in possession of the phone they were looking for, but also two other phones.
"One phone's owner, an overseas guest, was traced in Cape Town. She confirmed she had been robbed and that a criminal case will be opened. We are still busy tracing the other owner of the third phone."
Olivier added that the suspect was arrested.
