PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - September has over the years become synonymous with cleaning up the environment across the globe and this year Plettenberg Bay residents will once again join the rest of the world for World Cleanup Day.
The Nature's Valley Trust that's spearheading the Plett clean-up on 17 September said that the area's coastline is vital for many in the local community, but that it is threatened through unsustainable fishing practices, inconsiderate behaviour toward the oceans, and pollution.
"The ocean is a major food source across the globe and acts as the lungs of our Earth. The purpose of World Cleanup Day is to inspire change for a healthy and cleaner environment and to create awareness and take action to alleviate the pressures of litter and pollution on the world's oceans," the team said.
On 16 September the NVT will also host a clean-up in Kurland, starting at the Crags Primary School.
According to the team, this is an effort to raise the issue of waste in communities and forms part of a global attempt to address the growing litter and marine debris issues.
"We require as many hands as possible to help us raise the issue and assist our community in living in a safer environment. Every effort makes a difference."
