PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plett gymnastics star Leolin Petersen has once again kept her hometown's flag flying high by winning triple gold at the recently held Madiba Cup Festival in Cape Town.
The 16-year-old Plettenberg Bay Primary School alumnus, who is currently attending Framesby High School in Gqeberha to be closer to gymnastics coaches, displayed her skill in multiple events, earning an impressive three gold medals for her performance in senior women's double mini trampoline, junior women's trampoline, and junior women's power tumbling.
She was one of three Eastern Cape Academy of Sport gymnasts who participated in the inter-club competition on 16 and 17 June. The festival also provided a platform for Lenita Kotzé and Matthew Bosch to display their skills.
The competition served as preparation for the South African trials for the world championships between 30 September and 8 October at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp this year.
Boasting gold is nothing new for Leolin. Her most recent victories came when she raked in two gold medals and a silver at the Gymnastics South Africa National Championships in Gauteng in October last year.
She won gold in tumbling and Euro trampoline as well as a silver medal for double mini. She also qualified and competed at the Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships in Bulgaria last year.
Leolin, who has dreamed of becoming a world-class gymnast from the age of three, is currently being trained by renowned gymnastics coaches Mandy Zoonekynd and Lee Budler of Mandy's School of Tumbling and Trampoline, and aims to participate at the 2024 Olympic Games.
