This prestigious event, held from Thursday, November 10 to Sunday, November 13, saw 110 visiting, as well as members of four local clubs, compete against one another. The committees of the local bridge clubs worked together to make this a memorable occasion. Everything was done to make the 110 visiting players feel welcome and comfortable.
Brenton-on-Sea benefited from this event as most of the visitors made use of accommodation in that area. Johanna Mattheys, a local caterer, ensured that players received a delicious light meal every day during their playing sessions, while Rosemary and Dave McCausland provided bottled water and drinks. Dorette McGill created a magnificent floral centrepiece for the stage. This event was coordinated and supervised by Southern Cape Bridge Union president, Heidi Atkinson who also acted as the tournament director, ably assisted by her husband Richard Atkinson.
The winning teams of 26 were as follows:
1) Hillbrow Bridge Club: Neville Eber, Chris Bosenberg, Val Bloom and Tas Nestorides (all four have represented South Africa in the past - Eber and Bosenberg most recently at the World Bridge in Holland).
2) Johannesburg Bridge Club: Alon Apteker, Craig Gower, Robert Phillips, Bernard Donde (all four represented South Africa recently in Holland).
3) Alliance Bridge Club - Cape Town.
4) Impala Bridge Club - Cape Town.
"It was a fantastic opportunity for our players to improve their bridge!" said one such member of the Southern Cape Bridge Union.
