PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Young local karate sensation Galliano Boni (16) from Plettenberg Bay once again made South Africa proud when he secured a gold medal at the recent UFAK Region South Championships held in Luanda, Angola from 14 to 16 May.
Representing South Africa on the international stage, Boni produced a dominant display throughout the tournament, impressing judges and spectators with explosive speed, precision and powerful kata routines.
Competing in the junior division for the first time after progressing from the cadet ranks in 2025, he powered his way through every round, defeating all opponents with convincing 5-0 score lines. The latest achievement marks Boni's first major international medal of 2026 and further cements his reputation as one of Africa's rising karate stars.
Impressive rise through the ranks
Boni's victory in Angola adds to an already remarkable list of accomplishments achieved over the past few years. In 2025, he enjoyed a breakthrough season where he secured double gold at the UFAK Region South Championships in Durban, as well as a bronze and silver medal at the UFAK African Continental Championships in Abuja, Nigeria.
He also claimed a bronze medal at the African Youth Games in Luanda, narrowly missing out on a place in the kumite final after suffering a concussion during the semi-final bout.
His performances throughout 2025 earned him an outstanding World Karate Federation ranking of seventh in kumite and 13th in kata, making him the top-ranked joint kata and kumite cadet athlete in South Africa and the first South African competitor to achieve such a feat on the global stage. Earlier this year, Boni became the youngest South African athlete to reach a senior kata final at the South African Championships in Pretoria, where he earned a silver medal.
Overcoming setbacks
Prior to the Angola tournament, Boni experienced disappointment at the K1 Youth League event in Harare, Zimbabwe, where hopes of a podium finish ended following a disqualification linked to newly implemented WKF rules for 2026. Determined to put the setback behind him, Boni arrived in Angola focused and motivated - a mindset that ultimately paid off with another gold-medal performance.
A journey built on dedication
Boni began his karate journey at the age of four under the guidance of Sensei Elrie Bosman in Plettenberg Bay. Since then, he has competed internationally for over a decade, representing South Africa across multiple karate federations including ISKA, WUKF and WKF.
One of his earliest career highlights came in 2016 when, at just six years old, he became the first South African to win a Grand Champion trophy at the ISKA World Championships in Orlando, USA, televised live on ESPN.
Despite competing at the highest level internationally, Boni trains largely on his own while attending St Andrew's College in Grahamstown. His coaching support comes remotely from Cairo, Egypt and Grosseto, Italy, with regular online sessions and periodic international training camps. Apart from competing, Boni also has a passion for coaching and mentoring younger karate athletes.
Eyes set on bigger international goals
Boni's attention now shifts to the prestigious WKF K1 Youth League scheduled to take place in Pore, Croatia from 1 to 3 July this year.
The remainder of the year promises to be equally demanding, with preparations already underway for the UFAK African Continental Championships in Algeria in September, the WKF World Championships in Poland in October, and potentially the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in November - a lifelong dream for the young karate star.
