Tsengwa shooting: Focus on Lakhe as additonal charge added

KNYSNA NEWS - The attention in the case of the fatal shooting of former Knysna mayor and Ward 8 councillor Aubrey Tsengwa (47) shifted this week to Thobelani Lakhe (39), one of three accused.

Tsengwa was assassinated in Joodsekamp on 19 August and three people who were with him at the time were wounded in the attack.

Lakhe appeared briefly in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Tuesday 8 September, when an additional charge relating to allegedly stolen property - involving a Volkswagen Polo - was enrolled against him.

The charge was formally added to Lakhe's existing list of charges, which includes conspiracy to commit murder, murder and three counts of attempted murder.

A possible fourth count of attempted murder may still be added, as police have yet to obtain a statement from one of the victims who was hospitalised following the shooting.

The development came ahead of the anticipated bail application of Lonwabo Faleni (33), one of the three accused. As previously reported, the bail applications of Lakhe and co-accused Vusumzi Gungu (46) will remain in abeyance.

Lakhe was remanded in custody, while the additional charge was postponed to Friday 11 September, when all three accused are expected to appear in court.
