SEDGEFIELD NEWS - The Sedgefield Melodrama once again brought the community together for six evenings of music, laughter and entertainment during its 17th annual production concluding on Friday 4 September.
This year's theme, 'Night of the Icons', celebrated music made famous by some of the most iconic performers of our time.
Produced by Margie van Rensburg, with directors Tania Bouwer, Nerina Kruger, James Vivier and Gutlinn Goncalves, the production featured an all-local amateur cast where doctors, teachers and lawyers were among those that took to the stage.
The picnic-style event allows audiences to bring their own snacks and drinks while enjoying two acts, followed by an interval and the popular American Auction. Audience members bid for their favourite songs, after which the three highest-earning songs are performed again in an often hilarious encore.
The event raised an initial R372 185 through ticket sales, advertising, the Silent Auction and the American Auction this year.
Of this, ticket sales contributed R126 960, advertising R18 200, the Silent Auction R17 500 and the American Auction R209 525.
Proceeds after expenses are donated to NPOs and organisations that directly assist the Sedgefield community. Van Rensburg said she was particularly proud of the new cast members who took to the stage despite having no previous performing experience.
"I always say that participating in a melodrama is life-changing - you get to meet a whole new family you never knew existed," she said.
