CHESS NEWS - The Far Hills Country Hotel was a hive of activity on Saturday 3 December with the George Chess Club Open taking place.
About 200 participants from across the Western Cape, accompanied by parents and supporters, arrived excited and with anticipation - and no wonder, as the prize money was more than ever in the history of Western Cape chess.
According to Lionel Campbell, club chairman, the prize money added up to the historical amount of R28 500, excluding prizes, trophies and medals.
While five rounds of play across four sections were completed during the course of the day, parents relaxed on the patio, enjoying the beautiful surrounds.
"We are passionate about chess and the development of it," said Campbell. "Therefore the prizes for younger players included chess timers, chess sets and chess boards.
We want to promote chess among all ages. We also handed medals to all players 12 years and younger to inspire them not to give up." These prizes and the prize money were made possible by sponsors such as THREE6SIXTY Software, Chip Ace, TooDoo marketing and Property Connect.
