KNYSNA NEWS - The 15th edition of the Simola Hillclimb was characterised by deep sadness, matched by brave competition at the highest level during the King of the Hill challenge.
Sunday's shortened programme was dedicated to Pieter Joubert, who sadly passed away following an accident during the day's opening run.
Ultimately, two new King of the Hill winners were crowned, while a former winner blasted his way back to the top with an exceptional performance that set an impressive new record.
In the Modified Saloon Car category, Pieter Zeelie delivered a record-breaking performance in his Toyota MR2 Super GT, smashing the previous record with a time of 37.090 seconds to claim his second King of the Hill title.
Reghard Roets finished second, while seven-time World Rallycross champion Johan Kristoffersson lit up the hill in his electric Volkswagen Polo RX1e, setting a new EV record of 39.001 seconds.
The popular event was well attended.
Byron Mitchell emerged as a new King of the Hill in the Single Seater and Sports Car class, taking victory in his Reynard Formula VW after top contenders André Bezuidenhout and Robert Wolk were sidelined by mechanical issues.

In the Road Car and Supercar category, Clint Weston topped the timesheets in the hybrid-powered Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE E Performance with a dominant 43.174-second run.
