Oakhill learners serve up a feast

KNYSNA NEWS - Shifting from the motto of 'the Joy of Learning' to 'the Joy of Shining and Dining', Oakhill College recently hosted its annual SRC Food Evening, bringing together learners, parents and staff for some international cuisine, creativity and community spirit.

Held in the Oakhill College Quad, the sensory extravaganza featured international dishes prepared and served by learners of grades eight to 11. Each grade embraced a different culture and country through themed food stalls, decor and dress.

The Grade Eights rolled out the red carpet - quite literally - with an American-themed stall, giving guests a taste of Hollywood glamour alongside their dishes.

The Grade Nines transported diners to India, serving fragrant flavour-packed curry, accompanied by an elaborate hot sauce competition that added an extra edge of surprise for more-than-willing diners competing for a prize.

The Grade 10 stall took the guests to Greece, and servers dressed as Greek priestesses and gods served delicious pitas.

Grade 11 brought everyone back home, celebrating South African heritage with boerewors rolls and vetkoek, before closing off with a spirited rendition of the national anthem.

The matrics, nearly done with their high school careers, worked the crowd with trays of treats for sale - a small, sweet reminder that even in their final year, they are still willing to show up and serve.

The event raises funds for the student representative council (SRC) and Oakhill Interact's outreach initiatives throughout the year.
