KNYSNA NEWS - The word "rapid" is not often used to describe the game of chess, but this past weekend it was quite fitting when more than 60 players from around the country took part in the Oyster Rapid Chess Tournament at the Knysna Primary School clubhouse on Saturday 7 July.
What's more, a player from Knysna, Rauen le Grange, placed second overall out of 63 players – including some national players who came from as far as Port Elizabeth, Albertina, Cape Town and Riversdal to take part in the Chess SA-registered tournament organised by Sedgefield chess aficionado Terry Quirk.
George, Knysna, Oudtshoorn and Pacaltsdorp were also well represented.
This year’s tournament was won by Heinrich Basson from Stellenbosch making a clean sweep with 6 points out of 6. After that, four players finished with 5 points each. Second was Knysna’s Le Grange; Mossel Bay produced third-placed Ralph Botha plus fourth-placed Ralph Cloete, and Oudtshoorn’s Gerrit Hendricks came fifth.

The u18 category was won by Keegan Campher from Oudtshoorn, with Timothy Nevin from Port Elizabeth coming in second. The u14 champion came from Port Elizabeth in the form of Tyler Nevin, with Kea Holroyd also from Port Elizabeth placing second.
Holroyd was also the best female player of the tournament.
Quirk said the tournament was a resounding success and hopes that next year, as with this year, the tournament will keep on growing.
